Fine Mechanical Assembly

  • Assembly technicians, with more than 150 years combined experience assemble fine mechanical assemblies with system tolerances of up to 0.003 mm. Two axis mechanical gyroscopes with performance parameters of better than 0.5 degrees/hour are typical systems that require these fine tolerances. Most of the assemblies done at the facility are performed with the aid of either a 20x or 40x magnification microscopes. Typical components are High Precision ABEC 9 bearings, Rotor Assemblies, Motor Assemblies, Magnetizing and Demagnetizing of components and Fine Balancing of Motors with high precision Schenckequipment.

3rd Party Navigational Calibration

  • The Supply Chain Department currently calibrates and performs fault finding on 2 different navigational units under licence. The end users are the South African Air Force and Army. Supply Chain Department has
the facility and skills to perform such tasks and would like to broaden its horizons to other navigational products that are used within the borders of South Africa. The Supply Chain Department
has a well-established track record with our end user for timeous delivery, commitment and quality of workmanship.

Navigational Metrology

  • Our Metrology department is well equipped and can satisfy any requirement in the military environment. The equipment accuracy is referenced to the South Star, Sigma Octantis. The Supply Chain Department has its own Metrology Facility that supports the Fine Mechanical Assembly facilities.
The employees have more than 35years’ experience between them.
The prime areas of metrology are during the alignment, levelling and positional accuracy calibration of inertial test systems.
    On offer the following capabilities:
    • True North Alignment using a Gyro Theodolite to better than 10 arc seconds,
    • Levelling with reference to gravity to better than 5 arc seconds,
    • Rotation Positional Accuracy to better than 5 arc seconds.
  • These capabilities are typically used during the calibration of our 2 and 3 axis motion simulators, rate tables and indexing tables and during the installation of level machine bases.

Black Box Assembly and Test

The Internal Manufacturing facility within the Supply Chain Department specializes in the following:

  • Designing and layout of Electronic Black Boxes: entails the population of PCB’s, electrical wiring and connectors within the space available of the black box. Design of mechanical hardware with Environmental Stress Screens and Electro Static Discharge taken into account.
  • Ergonomics of Black Boxes: design a functional component as black box that ergonomically interfaces with the surrounding electrical and mechanical environment.
  • Structuring of harnesses inside the Black Boxes, the most functional layout of the wiring within the Black Box either through motherboard, back plain or hardwiring.
  • Testing and qualification of the units, entails the functional, vibration, temperature cycling, temperature shock, electrostatic susceptibility, and leak testing.

3D Measurement Metrology

  • INFORMATION AWAITING UPDATES.

Coil Winding

  • Coils needed for internal requirements are wound in the Supply Chain Department on coil winders. Coils with wire diameter of less than 0.03 mm can be manufactured. Where coils operate at different temperature ranges, matching processes are applied for thermal sensitivity.

Non Destructive Testing

  • The following Non Destructive tests can be executed by the Supply Chain Departments personnel who are a level 11 and complies with the NAS 410 (MIL STD 410E) standard:
    • Magnetic Partial Inspection (MT)
    • Ultrasonic Examination (UT)
    • Interpretation of Radiographs (RT)
    • Liquid Penetrant Inspection (PT)
    • Eddy Current Inspection (ET)

Fine Mechanical Workshop

  • General Machining

    • Ultra-high-precision milling and turning, with the capability of handling small production batches or one-off jobbing lots. Applications include gyro components and stabilized platforms.
  • Grinding

    • Surface and internal/external cylindrical grinding and measuring facilities capable of achieving tolerances of 1 micron on components.
  • EDM

    • A wire and spark erosion facility capable of producing components that exceed machine tool manufacturers’ expectations.
  • NC Machining

    • Five-axis machining centres capable of producing to aerospace as well as other customer specifications. (As well as NC turning).
